The Cannes Film Festival

Held every year over twelve days in May, The Cannes Film Festival is the highlight of the year’s calendar on the French Riviera. The Festival attracts film directors, producers and distributors from all over the world and, to cap it all, over 30.000 film stars complete with their vast entourages.

Twenty major films are in competition for awards such as best director, best actor and actress and at the end one film will be awarded the much-coveted Palme d’Or. The whole Festival is a glittering, star-studded event which is a haven for celebrity-spotters. Every night there are throngs of people around the red carpet just seeing who they can see.

Members of the public can’t get in to see any of the competition films but there are films that they can see such as during the Director’s Fortnight. In the past few years there have even been films screened on the beach which has proved to be very popular with visitors.

Another famous event is the Nice Jazz Festival which is held in the Jardins de Cimiez every July. These are Roman ruins and the event has been going strong since 1948. Jazz stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis have all performed here. There are two venues, Le Jardin and Scene Matisse and your ticket gives you access to both.

Then there is the Jazz a Juan Jazz Festival. This is held every year in July in Juan-les-Pins on the Cote d’Azur. This festival is the longest-running jazz festival in Europe and has also attracted all the great stars including Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus. The festival has a great ocean backdrop and although the venue is quite small, the sound quality is superb wherever you are seated.
