Popular historical attractions are the majestic Roman Catholic Saint Pierre Cathedral established in the 16th century, and the Porte do Peyrou archway. Montpellier is also home to France’s oldest botanical garden, which dates to the late 16th century, and the impressive Muse Fabre art museum, which is home to many thousands of paintings, drawings, and prints.

Outside of Montpellier to the south is the small coastal town of Palavas les Flots, which was founded as a fishing village that sold its catch to the markets of Monpellier. The town opened the region to coastal tourism in the mid 1900s by running a train to and from Montpellier.

North of Montpellier is Cevennes National Park, with majestic mountains, cave exploration, and a large arboretum. The South France has much to offer the casual tourist and explorers alike. A Montpellier rental car or St. Tropez Rental Car can provide the freedom such a holiday may need.
