Restaurant

There are around 5000 restaurants in the capital city itself, with differing levels of menus and prices. They remain open at some times of day, and usually remain closed once a week. Patrons tend to select stuffs from the printed menus. Certain restaurants present regional menus, whereas others present menu of the contemporary style. As per the law, the prix-fixe menu should be offered, even though some high-class restaurants might try concealing the fact. Some French restaurants concede to the requests of vegetarians.

Bistro(t)

This eating joint is often smaller as compared to a restaurant. It tends to make use of verbal menus or chalk board. Most of them feature regional cuisines. The dishes to be note include entrecote, calves’ liver, confit de canard, pot-au-feu, and coq au vin.

Bistrot a Vin

This joint resembles taverns or cabernets of the ancient France. Some of these offer cheap alcoholic drinks, whereas others boast of providing a complete range of AOC wines. Foods provided in some of them are pretty simple, inclusive of sausages, cheese, and ham, while others present dishes that are similar to the ones found in bistro.

Bouchon

Brasserie

The above-mentioned establishments had been created in 1870 by the refugees from ‘Alsace-Lorraine’. They serve beer, but majority of them happen to serve wines like Sylvaner, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling. These wines are a home to Alsace. The most reputable dishes include those made from seafood and Sauerkraut. Generally a brasserie remains open all the day through, presenting some menu or the other.

Café

This place is primarily a location for alcoholic drinks and coffee. Chairs and tables are typically set outside. Prices are marked up a bit en terrasse. Limited foods that are offered sometimes include salads, croquet-monsieur, pommes frites and mussels during the season. These cafes normally open up early during the morning. The time of closing is around 9:00 p.m.

Salon de The

Such locations resemble cafes in the remaining part of world. The tearooms of this type usually offer selected cakes. You won’t get to see alcoholic drinks over here. Most of these offer snacks, sandwiches, and salads. Hot chocolate and tea are also offered. They open just before lunch in the noon and close during the late afternoon.

Bar

This place is based on style of the US. Many of them were constructed during the start of 20th century. They serve pastis, cocktails, whiskey, and other types of alcoholic drinks.

Estaminet

This place is the peculiarity of Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. Such small restaurants/bars were looked upon in the form of central places for textile or mine workers, and farmers for meeting and socializing. Apart from usual beverages such as liquors, beers, etc. one was also entitled of ordering basic regional items, along with playing of several indoor games. They do not exist in any other area except the one mentioned above.
