A visit to the iconic city of Paris with children doesn’t have to be a daunting experience. With a range of fun and often educational activities available, the whole family are sure to love holidays to France’s capital city. If you don’t know where to start planning your itinerary, here are five activities that are guaranteed to leave all family members grinning from ear to ear:

1. Disneyland Paris

No family trip to Paris is complete without a fun-filled adventure at Disneyland Paris. Hold on to your hats as you encounter Big Thunder Mountain in Frontierland or buckle up on Space Mountain: Mission 2 in Discoveryland, as it blasts you through space.

Younger kids will love shows like the ‘Disney Dance Express’ and ‘Aladdin’s Magic Lamp’ before ending the day with the magical ‘Once Upon a Dream Parade’, featuring all popular Disney stars on eight magical floats.

2. The Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes

Dozens of species of rare animals can be found at the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes. As the oldest civil zoological garden in the world, the Ménagerie has a real charm about it and is ideal for a family of animal-lovers. The zoo is home to all sorts of creatures, from monkeys and snakes to birds of prey and turtles.

3. Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie

Learn about science in a fun and educational way at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (The Museum of Science and Industry), the largest science museum in Europe. There is a huge variety of interactive exhibitions designed to catch the imagination of children – and adults might even learn a few things too!

4. Foire du Trône

Every spring, the Foire du Trône brings fair attractions and amusements to the city. It may not be as big and grand as Paris Disneyland, but it’s equally as fun. Enjoy classic fairground rides like bumper cars and a huge Ferris wheel, as well as more daring rides that will have you flying through the Parisian skies.

5. Musée Grevin

Established in 1882, the Musée Grevin is one of the oldest wax museums in Europe. Featuring the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Marilyn Monroe, the museum is a fun day out for everyone. With 300 life-sized figures on display, it’s worth the trip to see the surprise on your friends’ faces when they flick through your holiday snaps!

Notre Dame de Paris is one of the most famous buildings in the world, and perhaps the most well-known cathedral. Beautiful gothic architecture and hundreds of years of history make it a must see destination for everyone. Luckily, cheap flights to Paris have made the City of Lights incredibly accessible and now you can go and visit this stunning cathedral yourself.

Notre Dame de Paris is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its beautiful bell towers and gargoyles will delight enthusiasts and casual tourists. The cathedral was restored in the 19th Century so it is completely intact and stands today in its full glory despite the fact that construction upon the site began in AD 1163.

Notre Dame de Paris has long been a site of important events, such as the beatification and canonisation of Joan of Arc. It is still an important touchstone for French culture; indeed, it is well known for its Lent sermons, which have recently seen speeches by some of France’s premier public figures and academics. In many ways a visit to the cathedral takes you to the heart of France’s past and present.

The cathedral stands alongside the Seine River, and is located in the fourth arrondissement of Paris. This central location means you can see Notre Dame de Paris and easily move on the exploring other parts of the city. Indeed, this great cathedral is an ideal starting point for anyone on a trip to Paris. Be sure to check out the iconic Eiffel Tower as well the Louvre and Montmartre during your time in the amazing City of Lights.

This winter many of us are waking up to all the usual hallmarks of a British winter: wrapping up warm, de-icing the car and latching on to the nearest radiator. Winter is many people’s least favourite season, probably best explained by how – besides summer – it is the most popular season to go away on holiday to escape the cold and spend time somewhere much warmer.

Whilst many people will jet away from the snow and ice for a hot beach somewhere tropical there are still people who enjoy the winter but would prefer to see winter in another country. Mainland Europe is a popular destination for many with stunning architecture being adorned with snow it can certainly make for a breathtaking sight. One country that fits this bill perfectly is France.

France has a wide range of attractions and varied destinations from Brittany in the North to Cannes in the south but the jewel in the crown has to be the capital, Paris. Paris is home to many well known landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysees. Often referred to as the city of romance Paris can offer plenty for you to see in the winter.

You don’t need to be outside in the cold with many famous museums and galleries providing plenty of historic art and culture as well as many gothic structures such as the Cathedrale Notre Dame or the catacombes giving you a perfect impression of the history and dramatic architecture of early Paris.

Paris is also arguably one of the main shopping capitals in the world with many high end brands and stores being located within the city.

Many Hotels in Paris are housed in these gothic buildings and many have been refitted and brought up to 21st century standards so you can get a perfect balance of old and new. With tourism being at the heart of the city you never have to wander too far with many hotels being situated either a short walk or a metro ride away from attractions and places of interest.

For families and those looking to venture outside of the city there is also the only Disney theme park in Europe and typically will have many special parades or celebrations that mark the festive season providing some excellent entertainment for children and adults.

So this winter you don’t have to stay stuck at home in the cold, going for a short trip over the winter period could let you see different places in picturesque conditions. With it also providing many areas of interest to make sure you aren’t locked away in a hotel room for the duration of your trip.

These are An Hour From Paris by Annabel Simms, and Parisians’ Paris by Bill Gillham. We have two copies of each to give away, so that is four prizes all together!

An Hour from Paris is a small classic: written with passion, perfectionism and amusement, a guide that will make you see a Paris – and a France – you would never have suspected. Now fully updated with extra walks.

A strength is that it focuses on relatively unknown places that you can reach by a local train ride from the centre of the capital – probably just as unknown to many Parisians.

Parisians’ Paris is a guide that will help you experience Paris like a true Parisian.

Bill Gillham has been visiting Paris for decades, immersing himself in a particular quartier of Paris, discovering its little shops and bistrots, its markets, parks, and local entertainments, all the little quirks and particularities of its day to day life. In this guide, he takes you to seventeen of his favourite areas of Paris – some central, some suburban, mostly just off the beaten track – and shows you how to discover the real city. Neglected, or completely ignored by ordinary guidebooks, these quartiers all have a purely individual, Parisian character.
