Le Monde diplomatique

Le Monde diplomatique can be referred to as one of the monthly publications offering opinion and analysis on culture, current affairs, and culture. Its articles are thoughtful, long, opinionated, and scholarly. It was, at first, created for diplomatic audience. This can be gotten to know from its name. Off late, this magazine has managed in taking the critical view on effects of the economic neoliberalism with respect to the population of the world.

Le Monde diplomatique, thus, is inclusive of articles of both, scholarly, as well as neutral nature. The opinionated pieces contained in it have been successful in giving it a feel of being in to advocacy journalism. Its articles and analysis, however, are still being read by people and scholars all over the political spectrum. From the time of 1970s, the editorial line of Le Monde diplomatique has become distinctly left-wing and altermondialist. All through Cold War, there had been the neutralist viewpoint, critical of foreign policy of the US.

As of 2008, this paper is being led by ‘Serge Halimi’. Original edition is being reported of having circulation of around 350000. 16 editions in the other languages give out the total of around 1.4 m readers across the globe.

Le Monde diplomatique SA

Le Monde diplomatique went on to become Le Monde SA’s subsidiary company in the year 1996, which has its entire editorial autonomy, that too, from Le Monde. Le Monde’s director, Andre Fontaine had already gone ahead with signing a convention in the year 1989 with ‘Claude Julien’ that granted autonomy on the monthly basis. However, the complete financial and statutory independence was gained in the year 1996 with formation of Le Monde diplomatique SA. Following donations from one of the antifascist of the German origin Gunter Holzmann who had exiled to Bolivia prior to the Second World War, the employees of Le Monde diplomatique acquired around ¼ th of capital, whereas Les Amis du Monde diplomatique, reader’s Law Association bought the other quarter in the year 1901. Thus, since the end of the year 2000, readers and employees of this newspaper retain around 49% of capital of le Monde diplomatique, hugely above control stock essential for controlling editorial line and direction of Monde diplo. Le Monde is the owner of rest of the 51%.
