Cinema of France takes into consideration all forms of art films which have been created with the national boundary or abroad by the French filmmakers. France is not only considered to be the birthplace of cinema but is also well known for its significant contributions in the area. Some very vital cinematic movements have also founds its birth in France. The country is well known of showcasing a very strong film industry, mostly due to the protection level provided by the French government. Protection from the French government heavily helps the film industry to compete with that of America. Some of the other important characteristics of French cinema include deviance from conclusive or happy ending, strong character development and slow plotlines.
Not only France is noted for its influential indigenous film tradition but also as a spot for gathering of artists from all around Europe and world. This is one of the reasons why French cinema is found to be connected with foreign nations most of the times. Some of the most distinguished directors of countries like Soviet Union, Argentina and Poland are in par with prominent directors of France. French directors like Luc Besson in U.S has also played important role in the development of the countries cinema and providing it international recognition.
Government protection: One of the greatest threats to the French cinema comes from the increasing popularity of television itself. Most of the countries today are facing the problem of reviving the cinema industry. It should be noted that the French cinema industry is very small when compared wit the English speaking market like that of the United States. On the other hand these English speaking markets are also very reluctant in importing foreign movies. Thus, the French movies have to be distributed in a smaller market leading to budget which is much lower than the competitors. This in most of the cases leads to reduced expenses upon special effects and expensive settings. The above stated factors have caused the French government to some up with various measures which ensure that the local movie theatres and production houses are provided with adequate support.
Mostly, the sale of video cassettes and DVD’s of movies is prohibited for sale to a period of six months after release. This is done to protect the local theatres and to ensure proper revenue. The government also provides various tax concessions to investments undertaken in the field of movie production. Taxes are levied upon various TV and movie channels and used as subsidies in the production of movies. At last the canal+ TV channel has been provided with a broadcast license which necessitates the support for movie production.
2000s: This can be considered as the time period which brought along several movies doing well in the box office. 2001 came along with the fourth Alien movie named Alien: Resurrection. Brotherhood of the Wolf released in 2002 came out to be the second highest earning French in the US box office. The year 2008 is one of the best years of French cinema with Academy Award for Best Actress being conferred upon Marion Cotillard.
