There are also a very large number of them and it is estimated that there are over 1000 castles and palaces in this area of France alone. The area is also known for its scenic countryside and the mediaeval villages that are located throughout it. For those who are looking to travel this part of France it can be the ideal destination because of its warm climate.

For those who enjoy history this part of France is a dream destination. There are numerous historic monuments including several sites of prehistoric significance. The region has been given World Heritage status by UNESCO because of its importance in relation to history. The Vezere Valley is of particular note and because of the immense number of historical sites in the Valley it has been described as the cradle of the human race. Those who are interested in finding cave paintings then it is definitely worth exploring the Lascaux caves which are around 17,000 years old and have many early paintings of animals.

Wine production in the region as a major business and many of the chateaus in the region are centres for this. If you are looking to pick up some traditional food then there are numerous historic market held in the various villages. All of these will have organic produce from local farmers and an array of delicacies for you to try. There are also market stalls where food is being prepared and often traditional music is played at the market. These do not just occur during the daytime and there are several night markets where visitors can do some shopping as well and enjoy a delicious evening meal.

With stylish accommodation in South West France and delicious home cooked meals using local produce accompanied by hand picked wines, what could be more conducive to getting those creative juices flowing?

Katie Elliott Armitage (whose wine buff husband selects the wines!) is opening her home and newly converted barn for a series of three and five day textile, creative writing, and dance workshops led by internationally renowned artists/teachers. The 2010 programme includes a ‘Poetry in Motion’ five day workshop led by internationally respected poet Roger McGough, as well as screenwriting, crime, and creative writing courses – all led by masters of their genres. These workshops are in addition to the proven textile and dance workshops amongst which is included Rachel Hazell’s ‘Extraordinary Expandable Sketchbook Journal’ workshop in collaboration with the prestigious Selvedge Magazine.

Les Soeurs Anglaises’ maison de maître sits in magnificent, and mature gardens alongside a burbling stream. The glorious house boasts a heated pool set against the idyllic countryside of South West France in the Perigord Vert region of Aquitaine, situated half-way between the bustling towns of Angoulème and Perigueux, not far from the historic villages of Brantome and Aubeterre.

With intimate groups of between eight and 16 participants the LSA workshops make ideal affordable breaks for anyone interested in learning or improving their skills – not to mention, the perfect getaways for singles.

“I know I felt very privileged to have the pleasure of your wonderful home and garden whilst learning a new skill. I realise the seamless elegant delivery of meals and ambience is extremely hard work, How beautifully you manage it.’
Jacqui Mair – Southsea, UK.

Free Disney trips, free horse-riding and free food are some of the Autumn offers from family friendly travel company Tots to Travel. Plus, families looking for a half term break can still snap up a property if they move fast.

FREE Horseriding Taster Sessions and Adventure treks for tots

Les Gites de Lavalette, in the Charente / Dordogne border offers families with children of any age entertainment on horseback! Apart from the FREE taster sessions for tots, the British owner (who is a British Horse Society trained instructor) provides horseriding lessons and a special Adventure Trek for little people which takes them on a tour across the local vineyards, through the walnut trees and down to the river for a snack. Adults can book sessions according to their level and experience.

Accommodation: Albizia (three bedrooms) and Acaia (two bedrooms) provide simple, clean and comfortable accommodation with plenty of toys and play equipment for the children.

Cost: prices start from £475.00 in September 08 with Albizia still available for half term.

Disneyland: Parents Go FREE! And free limited edition champagne and champagne house tour

Le Manoir Champagnois, which includes Le Gite Meunier (two bedrooms) and La Maison Verger (one bedroom gite), is just 90 minutes from the thrill and excitement of Disneyland Paris and just three hours from Calais ferry port. Any guests staying during September through to the end of January 2009 will have tickets waiting for them on their arrival at Le Manoir, which lets parents go free to both Disney Park and Disney Studios. This means no waiting in queues – and as under 3s are always free, it’s a great way to see the park for next to nothing.

Autumn and winter are the very best times to enjoy the park as the crowds have vanished and the cooler weather makes for an altogether more comfortable trip. The Tots to Travel team will provide Disney novices with loads of tips like where to park, where to eat and which rides are a ‘must.’

In addition, first time visitors to Le Manoir Champagnois will also receive a limited edition bottle of Compte Audoin de Dampierre Grand Vintage 2002 Champagne in a Dampierre ice bucket PLUS entry for 2 people to one of the major Champagne houses in either Epernay or Reims.
