Cheaper international flights have meant that people are going further afield and this has had a negative effect on tourism in France.

However, it seems that the number of people visiting this beautiful part of the country is on the rise again as they begin to understand the environmental impact of long haul flights. The increased interest in tourism has also meant that the number of homes being sold to Britons in the area has greatly increased and in the last year sales have increased by around 40%.

Research has been conducted by the company Eurocamp, which operates campsites across France. This research is showing that the Pyrenees and Brittany are the two regions that have seen the most growth in the past year. Many people who have invested in French property there will be pleased with this as it will probably mean that a boom in their profits is coming.

The managing director of Eurocamp is Deborah Beckett who has commented, “The interest in France for British tourists is booming once again, especially in the key areas such as Brittany.” Brittany Ferries, have also noted a steep increase in the number of people looking for tickets to visit the region next summer.

Ms Beckett continues, “People are becoming more concerned about the impact they are having on the environment and taking a holiday closer to home means they leave less of a carbon footprint. We also expect that people find it less stressful to organise a holiday closer to home and this keeps them returning to France.” France is one of the countries that are set to benefit the most from the environmentally friendly UK traveller.

This is probably partly because it is so easily reached from the UK. Those who are coming with a mobile home can easily reach the region by ferry from several major ports. Another appeal of the region is the weather, which enjoys a climate rather similar to that of Cornwall.

Many people in the area are also those who have left Britain to live in France. There is a very gentle pace of life in the area and people enjoy their food and wine. While many of us describe going on a holiday in a mobile home a camping trip, this is not really camping in the traditional sense. Today, static mobile homes are so well equipped that those staying in them are practically living in luxury, although maybe they will retain the nice thought that they are ‘living rough’ a little.

For those who want to travel with their own camper van France is a delight. The population of the country is about the same as the UK, but the land area is about three times the size. This means that the roads are usually not busy and can be a real pleasure to drive on. When you get off at any of the ports in Brittany you will find it easy to be able to get to the camp sites in Brittany because of the clear and fast autoroutes – the drive time should be around three hours.

There is a great deal of accommodation options for those who are looking for somewhere to park their mobile home. Choosing where to set up for the holiday is one of the hardest parts of the time away as each part of Brittany has something different and exciting to offer, but the advantage of travelling on wheels is that you can easily choose to go somewhere else on a whim.

While Brittany is quite large, there is no reason why you cannot head out on day trips to some further away areas. This part of France is full of history and it would be shame to miss out on it. The area is particularly famous for the ‘standing stones,’ of which there are around 3,000 in the area – these are known as the Alignments and are well worth seeing.

Dinan is a spectacular medieval town that is full of history. The place is filled with architecture that is ancient and fascinating. If you want to experience the best view of the town then you should head to the old castle which is on the River Rance.

The excellent weather combined with the superb facilities offered at the campsites and the stunning beaches make this area the ideal holiday destination. So for a holiday full of sun, sea and sand and complete freedom, Brittany is perfect for your next family holiday.

One of the best beaches for those having a family holiday under canvas is Benodet. There are numerous watersports to be enjoyed here when you venture off your campsite. Beach kayaks and pedaloes can be hired or simply relax on the golden sands while the children play safely. The beautiful beaches of Plage St. Gilles and Plage du Letty are also in Benodet, giving you a choice of where to lie in the glorious sunshine.

Another Brittany resort with superb beaches is Carnac. The main beach is the stunning La Grande Plage, and there are also another four beaches to choose from, smaller than the main one. They are all sheltered and La Grande Plage and St. Columban are both supervised by lifeguards. This gives you the added reassurance that your children can play safely in the sand or paddle without you having to watch them every minute.

There are also beaches in Brittany that fall into the categories of Natural and Wild. There are several beaches in an area known as the Pink Granite Coast, which have stunning and rock formations as their backdrop. The drive from your campsite in Brittany to Cote Sauvage is well worth it if you like a wilder landscape. The coastal walks are along the jagged cliffs give you some great views of the Emerald Coast.

There are of course many tourists who enjoy the hustle and bustle of more commercial beaches, which come complete with promenades to stroll along and cafes and shops close by. In the south east corner of Brittany lies the beach of La Baule, the perfect place to spend the day swimming, strolling and topping up your tan. The sands run for 4 miles and the small islands you can see offshore make for some great holiday snaps.

If you are looking for a holiday in Brittany, check out some of these holiday ideas from family camaping holiday specialist Canvas Holidays.

A must-visit for any walking or cycling fanatic, Canvas Holidays’ Brittany site ‘Camping L’Atlantique’ is the ideal base for exploring the beautiful region of Fouesnant. Famed as a haven of nature and peace, the area offers visitors the opportunity to explore windswept deserted beaches, verdant groves of Cyprus trees and sea pine, and marine lakes and grassland packed with wildlife.

A wide selection of well-trodden local tourist routes of between seven and eleven kilometres snake past the campsite and offer visitors a perfect day out in the fresh Atlantic air. Popular trails include ‘Autour de Beg-Meil’, which winds its way between the headlands of Beg-Meil and Mousterlin via stunning sandy beaches, beautiful coves and dunes.

As you venture further, beaches become more remote and are increasing flanked by the fertile bogs and swamps of Penfoulic – settle down and bask in the sun or wander carefully so as not to disturb the abundant flora and fauna that calls this place home.

Cyclists can head off on the 33 kilometre circuit ‘Le Tour de Fouesnant’ which encompasses all the main sights and spectacular scenery the region has to explore. Or, for those looking for a more leisurely stroll, ‘Le Marais de Mousterlin’ is an easier flat cycle route, perfect for beginners. Bikes can be hired from the campsite from 13 € per day.

In the pretty town of Fouesnant, look out for the myriad artisans still producing the tiny lace strips renowned as the finest in Brittany, or clamber back in time with a visit to Romanesque Saint-Pierre. Don’t leave without sampling the famous local cider – so good it even has its own festival in July.

Camping L’Atlantique offers guests the opportunity to order a picnic lunch for 8€ per person and half board from 18€ per day for those who want to put their feet up once back on site.

A long-time favourite with Canvas Holidays visitors, Camping L’Atlantique makes a relaxing base with a friendly atmosphere, first class facilities and accommodation ranging from tents to luxurious mobile homes.

A visit in May or June is ideal for couples, groups of walkers and young families with July and August enjoying a lively atmosphere perfect for older children with Canvas Holidays’ innovative FamilyExtra activity programme in full swing.

Stay seven nights at Camping L’Atlantique, Fouesnant, Brittany from £571 per family based on arrivals on 21 June 2010 with two adults and up to four children sharing a three bedroom select mobile home with decking. Price includes a midweek Dover to Calais ferry crossing for a car and passengers.

Its rugged, indented coastline is littered with small and pretty fishing villages. To the north the region has a rocky landscape and to the south sandy, sun swept beaches. Fishing, farming and tourism are the important sectors of Brittany’s economy and of the three, fishing is probably still the mainstay however, over the last few years and due largely to an influx of British expats buying property, gite and holiday tourism has grown as has the demand for long term lets in Brittany.

Located on the west coast of France, Brittany has a warm, temperate climate. Rainfall occurs regularly (which helps keep its countryside lush green) however sunny and cloudless days are also common.

In the summer months, temperatures in the region can reach 30 degrees Celsius, but remain comfortable compared to parts of France south of the Loire. Brittany generally has a moderate climate during both summer and winter and rain is not uncomfortably common or rare.

Brittany’s most popular summer resorts are on the south coast such as La Baule, Belle Île and the Gulf of Morbihan although the wilder and more exposed north coast also attracts summer tourists.

Overview

Brittany or Breton as it is pronounced is said to be an independent province of France. Generally, Brittany is a cultural center of France which corresponds to the independent duchy and old province of France. Brittany was also popularly known as Lesser Britain. Previously, Brittany was divided into two regions of France where 80 percent became Bretagne while the remaining 20 percent was known to be Brittany. This province occupies a big neck of land in the northwest, which lies between Bay of Biscay in the south to English Channel in the north. This province was previously divided into five sections namely, Finistere in the west, Cotes-d’Armor in the north, Loire-Atlantique in the south-east, Ille-et-Vilaine in the north-east and Morbihan in the heart of the province which borders Bay of Biscay.

Tourist Attractions in Brittany

The province of Brittany is one of the best tourist destinations as it has many things to offer to all the visitors. This province boasts a wealth of tourist attractions in order to ensure that every tourist enjoys his or her stay tremendously. There are picturesque harbors, Street-side cafes, historic medieval castles, mighty chateaus, lush rolling country-side and wide sandy beaches. First among the attractions is certainly the Mont Saint Michel or St Michael’s Mount. This is one of the most visited sites in Brittany. This mount is a projection of granite bursting through the center of the bay which has been a shelter since 709. Most of the structures which exist are dated from the 13th to 16th centuries which include the Gothic Benedictine Abbey.

Saint Malo is another town which is mostly visited by the tourists all round the year. This town is a fortified enclave which stands tall on the peninsula at the mouth of Rance River. This town has become well known as the home for pirates and adventurers. A visit to the province of Brittany would be incomplete with experiencing the joys of boat ride. The Chateaubriand Cruises normally offers boat trips to see the famous tidal hydroelectric plant, which is one of the first full scale tidal power station in the world. Besides the attractions Brittany is well known for its festivals such as Fete des Remparts which is usually celebrated in the third week of July in every two years. It is believed that this festival hosts one of the largest medieval festivals in the history of Europe where almost 5000 people dressed in colorful medieval dresses take the flag on the streets.

Other activities in Brittany

Brittany also has some of the most popular sandy beaches which are easily accessible from the city. St Jacut-de-la-Mer and St Cast-le-Guildo are the two most famous beaches in the city. Both these beaches are said to be the most clean and well maintained golden beaches in the city. The entire coastline of this province is quite beautiful with its colorful limestone cliffs. Even the coastal paths between the Plouman’ch and Perros Guirec are beautiful and exhilarating. Certainly, on the windy day the wind blows the cob-webs away even as admiring the strength of the mighty sea that has produced such an impressive pink rock formations.
