It is just west of Cote d’Azur and despite not being part of this exclusive region it certainly still houses some of the most exclusive resorts anywhere in France, being the home of the famed region of St Tropez.

There are miles and miles of beaches in this part of France but there is plenty more on offer as well. For those who enjoy natural beauty and historical attractions the area is rich in these and you will enjoy exploring the history of the region.

Forests are plentiful in the region and there are numerous hilltop villages for exploring, from these villages you will enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding area. If you are visiting this part of France it would be well recommended that you visit a vineyard in the region because it is famous for its wine.

In the 1950s St Tropez became famous as a retreat for the rich. There are miles of beautiful beaches that are all open to the public and the service on these beaches for visitors is unmatched. There are luxurious sunbeds for lying on as well as a drinks service, of course all of this comes with a price that is, as you might expect, quite high.

In October every year yacht owners from many countries come to St Tropez to take part in the regatta that is held in the town. This is an excuse for the rich to show off their impressive vessels and if you are in St Tropez at this time of year you are going to see some incredibly opulent yachts.

Less luxurious than these, but still worth using, are the pleasure boats which transport tourists to smaller towns nearby. The network of canals that these boats sail down has been nicknamed the Venice of France because of its similarity to the famous canal city.

One of the biggest attractions of the French Riviera is certainly the sea and whether you are on the ocean or just on the beach you are sure to enjoy your time. Windsurfing is a popular activity on some peninsulas in the area and paragliding is something that can be enjoyed in many places. If you’re looking for something a bit more relaxed then you can rent a pedalo.

Bandol is a town nearby that is particularly known for its wine production and many tours run to the area where visitors can take part in tastings. The soils in this region are particular well suited to special types of grapes and there are 14 vineyards nearby which have been rated as producing some of the highest quality wine in the South of France.

Often times between those that do not know one another very well it amounts to an air kiss but close friends will make contact. And it all depends on the region as to whether there will be two, three or possibly four kisses.
If you are meeting a big crowd it may take sometime to get on with things since the greetings may last a while. Also when the evening is over, kisses are traditional. So men will kiss women and women will kiss women but it is quite rare to see men kiss men. And the traditional greeting for a man or woman if they are strangers is a handshake while kissing seems to remain for just friends.
Nevertheless kisses are not just for close friends, even casual acquaintances kiss but not strangers. If you approach a French person, for the first time and attempt to kiss them you probably will be thought of as forward and quite possibly rude. The French are quite polite but it is much like any new or foreign culture knowing the rules is not easy. One good rule of thumb is to be observant and watch what others do.
A safe way alternative is if in doubt do not pucker up, reach out with you hand. French people always shake hands making it commonplace in the country. In France it is a gesture of kindness to shake the hand of your mechanic at the garage or the repairman that comes to the house or even someone providing other services. Just remember not to kiss them, regardless of how nice they may look.
Often times you run into people you know more than once the same day. The rule to follow is to just kiss them the first time you see them and a hello is sufficient thereafter for that same day. Another custom not well known is that upon leaving a bar you usually do not kiss or shake hands, but you would do that if you were having dinner at someone’s house.
Just remember to watch others and learn from them. For instance let’s say you may not know a person at the start of a party so the formal handshake was used. But by the end of the evening you may feel comfortable with them and then a kiss may be appropriate to say good night.

The property market in France has been generally good over the last half decade with house valuations remaining on a slight upward trend. Country properties remain very good value, particularly if you’re after plenty of land, with some unbelievable bargain available. However, as in the most European countries, the house valuations of seaside and city properties are at a premium and therefore cost an awful lot more.

Town or Country?

Property on the French Riviera remains among the most expensive, but also prestigious, in the world and with such a beautiful capital city one would expect Paris to be a very expensive buy as well but property in Paris remains a good long-term investment. In France, new properties are widely available and include coastal and city apartments, ski and golf developments, and a wide range of individually designed houses and chalets. It must be said that most new French properties are part of purpose-built developments, often located along the coast or in mountain areas, encompassing a golf course, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a gym or fitness club, and a restaurant. British purchasers of French property need to understand that the French purchase procedure for property is somewhat different to the norm in the UK, the French have different Building Surveys and their own version of the Home Buyers Report.

North or South?

Some of the most popular areas for buyers of French property include Paris, the Loire Valley, the South of France (particularly the French Riviera or Côte d’Azur and Provence), south-west France (e.g. Charente, Dordogne and Gascony), and of course Brittany and Normandy, which are particularly popular with the British. Winter holiday homes in French alpine ski resorts are also popular, especially in fashionable resorts such as Chamonix. Properties in French ski resorts are usually an excellent investment and also make fine summer holiday homes, especially if you’re a keen hiker. But do remember that French properties are built differently than in the UK, they not only look different, but tend to use different techniques and materials, so don’t expect a UK Building Survey to be of enormous help!

Big or Small?

Apart from obvious points such as size, quality and land area, the most important factor influencing a house valuation in France is its location. A restored or modernised two-bedroom house in the north-west (e.g. Normandy) but sells for double or treble that price in the south-east (e.g. Provence), so don’t rely on a one size fits all assumption for house valuations, France is a huge country. Similarly, the closer you are to the coast or Paris the more the house valuation is.

A farmhouse with a barn and a large plot of land in North West France will have the same house valuation or cost as a tiny studio apartment in Paris or on the Côte d’Azur. Property in ski resorts varies considerably in price according to the resort and the location of the property.

Help financing your French property in France is well worth investigating, mortgages are available from all major French banks (both for residents and non-residents) and many foreign banks and by using local services you will get the right building survey and equivalent of the HomeBuyer Report.

It is common sense to say that in order to learn to speak French like the French speak French you should learn to speak it in France.

There are many excellent language courses available in the United States, Canada and the UK but it is essential to speak and hear the language the way it is spoken in France. So going to France to learn the language gives you a huge advantage over others that learn somewhere else.

Not only will you learn French in the country of its origin you will also be able to steep yourself into the deep culture and history of the country. What better way than to be with people that are like minded and are there to learn the language and you can attend classes all day together, practice together and socialize together to get a real true immersion into the culture and country.

You will be able to watch French television, listen to French music, eat French food and learn the actual terms used when ordering food in a restaurant not just what is book correct and has the correct punctuation and grammar.

Also you can decide to be in France for a week, a year or if a lifetime, the choice is all yours. One problem does arise when learning French in France and that is all of the different dialects that are used in the country. The different dialects contain their own vocabulary and it is not just as simple as having different accents. For instance the difference between the Bronx and Boston or Austin and Hartford but they are entirely different can be compared to the Yorkshire and Cornish dialects in the UK.

We are not just talking about the difference between the French spoken in Canada, Africa or the Caribbean but right in France there are languages spoken like Limousin, Gascon, Lorrain and others that are entirely different that “classical” French.

It was first formed in 1946 and gives one of the most sought after awards throughout the film community. The festival is organized in Cannes, on the ‘Palais des Festivals’, in southern France.

In September 1939 the first Cannes was held as a competition with the Italian film festival. However, due to the ravages of World War II, the festival ceased and did not resume until after. The casino of Cannes was the first location for the revived festival, in 1946, and the festival was an instant hit. Its fame grew with each year.

During the second Cannes Film Festival sixteen different countries partook in the competition. The highest award, the Golden Palm, was created for the 1955 festival. Every annual festival is judged by a jury headed by an individual, and the awards are given in varying categories to reflect an array of achievements. Although the name has changed over the years, in 2002 it was finally set in stone as Festival de Cannes.

The sectors that receive the different awards at the film festival are easily separated into three groups: prizes from individuals, competition, and other sections. The highest profiled category is the competition one. The prizes here are the Grand Prize of Festival, the Golden Palm, Best Female Actor, Best Male Actor, Jury Prize, Best Screenplay, and Best Director. In the section for others you’ll find Student Films, and Best Feature as examples of the prizes.

The 2011 Cannes Film Festival is set to be held from May 12th to May 23rd and a brand new prize category will be started from this year on. It will be given for the best Short Film, according to the announcement made.

Just like it has done in the previous years, the committee for the festival revealed ahead of time who will head up the award ceremony’s jury. Unbelievably, it is Tim Burton. He is famous as a modern half art, half movie, film maker from Hollywood. His movies are popular and quite dark in their artistic outlook.

The Cannes Film Festival is anticipated to be yet another big hit with the public this year.

It only makes sense that to speak correct French you need to learn in France. There are other very good course offered in the UK, Canada and the US, but in order to speak as they speak in France you will hold a definite advantage by study there.

Many French courses offered in the country also give insight to the country where French started and also give you the opportunity to learn about the culture. You can learn about the history, culture and geography of the country with other students creating the best way to learn any new language. Surrounding yourself with those interested in the same outcome.

Talk about economic issue, enjoy the music they enjoy, watch French TV, eat their cuisine and learn how to realistically order food at a restaurant. The French course in your own country will teach you the grammatically current way, while classes in France give you hands on.

If you were to live in France or study in France for weeks or for year it obviously gives you a better overall understanding of the country, its people and the language. Learning French from the French is better than any other method. There are always problems associated with learning any language.

Like many languages French has many dialects with each having its own vocabulary. It is not as simple as accents like the difference between the north and south in the United States. In this case the languages are nearly completely different. This is comparable to the Cornish and true Yorkshire in the UK. Just within France there are many different languages spoken, for instance, Gascon, Lorrain and Languedocien. Lest we forget classical French.

Learning French while living in France make sure it is true French and be thankful for the chance to learn other dialects if you so choose. If you choose not to learn the local dialect you can focus on just what is known as classic French, not colloquial.

If you take local classes close where you live, you will sign up and you and the teacher probably know very little about the language and country, nor what version you are learning. Your accent will be atrocious and if you went to France, very few would understand your regular school French.

Therefore the advantages of learning French in France are superior to anywhere else. Not only will you learn to speak but you will understand when spoken to.

The presence of the Loire estuary requires that the road passes through the ring of Nantes, which is regularly crowded in the rush hours of the morning and evening. There is currently inadequate road crossing over the Loire, between the Saint-Nazaire and the Chevire. The transition roadway from Nantes to go North-west to South-west it is almost inevitable that there will be very heavy traffic especially during major holidays

The city of Nantes has invested in a program to reduce vehicle traffic to the downtown city centre over the last fifteen years and with a total length of 43 km, the ring roads of Nantes are currently the second largest in France after those of Bordeaux. Within his ring road you can reach almost the whole of Nantes and the towns of Reze and San Sebastian in the south.

Access to the city is by different gates that mark the layout of the road system and the system allows the bypassing of the city from the north and south and it has various names: the North is the A844 motorway to the West it is the RN844, South the RD145 and RD844 and lastly the East it is the RN249.

This road names delineates the construction stages from the various main lines joining Nantes. The cross roads are made up of the A811 motorway, that connects the interchange number 22 of the A11 at junction 42 of the road system, also known as the Boulevard but better known as the Door of Anjou.

In conjunction with this a policy of car sharing which was introduced in Nantes in 2008, known as the Marguerite alternative networks and Transit systems were created for Bicycle sharing as well.

Although the popularity of mobile phones in the UK is well established, it must not be forgotten that across Europe and the rest of the developed world the mobile industry is booming. Over 90 per cent of the population of France has at least one mobile phone and there are plenty of network providers to choose when you are thinking about signing up to a new contract for making calls abroad. Here is a quick overview of the major mobile phone providers in France.

Orange is currently the largest mobile phone provider in France and it is a brand that is largely owned and operated by France Telecom. It operates using a number of universal network technologies and this included high speed 3G networking with HSPA connectivity for unrivalled mobile internet access and seamless downloads. Orange provides a number of deals for customers and it is a key partner for smartphone manufacturer Apple, bringing the iPhone to consumers before any other network. A variety of price plans including pay monthly and pay as you go options are available from Orange and if you are after entry level mobiles rather than high end smartphones it has great value handsets on offer.

SFR is France`s second largest mobile phone provider and it is partially owned by Vodafone, which means it acts as a partner network for any UK customers arriving on the continent. It supports 3G networking for high speed data transfers via mobile phone and it champions a number of different smartphones, including those which use the Google Android operating system. Amongst its price plans of the pay monthly variety you can pick up deals which give you the first few months of the service free of charge and this is applied across a wide range of contracts as long as you sign up for a minimum of 12 months. Delivery on all of its new mobiles is free of charge and if you are not satisfied with your purchase or service there is a conditional money back guarantee.

Bouygues Telecom currently services the third largest mobile user base in France and it has competitive pricing and offers which allow it to stack up against its larger rivals. Its motto is that the mobile user should not only have freedom of movement, but also freedom of choice and as such it has a number of customisable packages and price plans to examine. Many of its offers are exclusively open to online transactions, so it is worth keeping tabs on its website if you want to get the best possible deal. Each package includes a set number of inclusive minutes and texts each month, starting with one hour of talk time on the cheapest deal and going right up to 40 hours or more depending on your needs. you can choose either a 12 or 24 month contract and the longer commitment period will get you a cheaper monthly price.

Choosing one of these three major French providers or one of the smaller alternatives can be difficult, particularly if you are looking to make cheap calls abroad by picking up a locally sourced mobile phone and contract. However, if you use price comparison online you will be able to seek out the ideal plan for you.
